Aetna Foundation Regional Grants

Aetna Foundation Regional Grants provide funding for organizations that focus on issues that improve health and the health care system related to obesity, racial and ethnic health care equity, and integrated health care.

Deadline: 9/15/13; awards can be as much as $40,000.

The 2013 Regional Grants will focus on:
•    Healthy food choices - Programs that provide nutrition education and help increase the availability of affordable fresh fruits and vegetables in underserved communities
•    Healthy activity - Programs that provide opportunities for physical activity in underserved communities

Community wellness initiatives focusing on healthy food and activity that serve low-income, underserved, or minority populations.

The Saucony Run For Good (Youth Running Program Grant)

Devoted to informing the public about the cause and prevention of childhood obesity, thje Run for Good grant provides funding to optimize the impact and success of community organizations that promote running and healthy-lifestyle programs for youth.


Approximately 10-20 grants of varying amounts are awarded each year.   


Deadline: June 13, 2013.

UnitedHealth HEROES Service Learning Grants $1K

Youth Service America, along with UnitedHealth group, have created the UnitedHealth HEROES program, a health literacy initiative designed to encourage youth (ages 5-25) to partner with schools and nonprofits to create hands-on programs to fight childhood obesity.

Awards are available up to $1,000. Schools and other community-based nfp’s can apply

Deadline: October 15, 2012.

Proposals must include an activity element where young people can count their steps, such as walking, running or hiking, as well as a service component which provides direct service, enables advocacy on behalf of a cause, or features youth philanthropy. Each project will begin on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, January 21, 2013 and end on Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), April 26-28, 2013.

2012 ING Run For Something Better School Awards Program



With the goal to empower school age children nationwide with the means to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle, ING Run For Something Better, in partnership with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, has developed a school-based running program. In addition to fighting childhood obesity, research shows that physical activity improves self esteem, school performance and overall well being.
All information is located at the Call for Applications.

The awards program provides a minimum of fifty (50) grants up to $2500 for each school that desires to establish a school-based running program or expand an existing one.

Application Deadline: May 15, 2012

Youth Service America / UnitedHealth HEROES Grants to Fight Obesity

Youth Service America, along with United Health group, have created the UnitedHealth HEROES program, a health literacy initiative designed to encourage youth to partner with schools and nonprofits to create hands-on programs to fight childhood obesity.

Awards are available up to $1,000.

Educators, students, and nonprofit leaders are eligible to apply.

Deadline: October 22, 2010.

Grants should “engage participating youth in service-learning, an effective teaching and learning strategy that supports student learning, academic achievement, and workplace readiness.” The grants encourage semester-long projects that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 17, 2011) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011).

YSA will host two application training webinars, September 16th at 3:00 PM EST and October 5th at 5:00 PM EST, for applicants to learn more about developing a successful project. Please visit the registration link.
