GreenWorks! grants for shools


Get your green on with a Project Learning Tree (PLT) grant. PLT is awarding up to $1,000-3,000 to schools and youth organizations that propose environmental service-learning projects.

PLT, an award-winning national environmental education program for preK-12 educators and their students, is providing up to $1,000 for schools and youth organizations that propose environmental service-learning projects. Grants of up to $3,000 will also be awarded to registered PLT GreenSchools (registration is free) that have established a Green Team, completed one of more of the PLT GreenSchools! Investigations, and propose a project based on the findings of at least 1 of the PLT GreenSchools! Investigations. GreenWorks! encourages students to “learn by doing” through community action projects that improve an aspect of their school or their neighborhood’s environment. Some examples of past grant projects include energy conservation, habitat restoration, and watershed improvement.

3rd Grade Cabbage Program grant



Yes, it's just what it sounds like: a 3rd Grade CabbageProgram*. Deadline: September 16, 2013.

Each year, BonniePlants distributes free cabbage plants to 3rd-graders across the country to foster an interest in gardening and the environment. Cabbages will be delivered to students whose teachers have signed up to participate. Students will each receive their own cabbage to plant, care for, and harvest. .

As part of the program, Bonnie Plants will also give a $1,000 award to 1 student in each state. All info here.


* From the Bonnie Website: Why a cabbage? It was the first plant sold by our company in 1918. The cabbages are the O.S. Cross variety, which is known for producing giant, oversized heads, making the process even more exciting for kids. Some kids have grown cabbages weighing more than 50 pounds!

Green Education Foundation



The Green Education Foundation and Gardener's Supply Company are offering funding to sustain existing youth garden programs that have demonstrated success and have impacted the lives of kids and their community.

Maximum Grant: $1,000     Deadline: September 30, 2013     Go directly to guidelines and application
Only for existing garden programs involving children currently in grades K-12, from schools and youth groups nationwide (not a garden that has not yet been started).

Earth Savers Club Grants

Through the Earth Savers Club (powered by Greening Forward), youth choose which environmental problem they wish to tackle while program resources and staff provide opportunities for youth to strengthen their civic leadership skills. Greening Forward is offering $50-500 to environmentally-focused, youth-led school, community, and faith-based groups that become a partner of the Earth Savers Club program. The grants are only for Club Partners, though that's easily done with an online application.

Youth-led school, community, and faith-based groups with an environmental focus can sign up to become a partner of Greening Forward's Earth Savers Club Program. (It is free to become a partner.) Partners are granted access to a number of resources, including mini grants ($50-500), social activism training, mentorships, and the Earth Saver Award.

Project Learning Tree



Project Learning Tree is accepting applications for PLTGreenworks grants. These grants are intended for environmental service learning projects such as: school/community native plant garden, a forest improvement project, a streamside restoration plan, a recycling program, or energy conservation project.

Grants are available in two award levels,the deadline fro both is September 30, 2013.

1) the popular and traditional GreenWorks! grants up to a maximum of $1,00
•  The maximum grant award for this level is $1,000
•  Grants must be completed in one year
•  Applicants must have attended a PLT workshop
•  The proposed project must involve service-learning
•  The proposed project must exemplify student voice
•  The proposed project must involve at least one community partner
•  The proposed project must secure at least 50% matched funds (in-kind acceptable)
 
2) GreenWorks! grants up to $3,000 for registered PLT GreenSchools.
• The maximum grant award for this level is $3,000
• Applicants must meet all the parameters for traditional GreenWorks! grant funding
• Applicants must be a school (public or private)
• Applicants must be registered on the PLT GreenSchools! website (It’s free!)
• Applicants must have an established Green Team
• Applicants must have completed one of more of the PLT GreenSchools! Investigations
• The proposed project must be based on the findings of one or more of the PLT GreenSchools! Investigations

Constellation Energy’s EcoStar Environmental Stewardship Grant: $5K



Constellation Energy, a national energy company, is providing grants of up to $5,000 are available to nfp’s working on environmental stewardship projects in their communities.

The EcoStar program targets community-based projects that fit into one or more of five stewardship categories — pollution prevention, education and outreach, energy efficiency, conservation, and community activism.

Since its launch in 2010, the program has awarded one hundred and forty-seven grants totaling $655,000. Funded projects have ranged from urban gardens and wetland restoration to innovative programs that promote energy efficiency and improved air quality. A pdf of the 2012 winners is here.

To qualify for a grant, a project should be located in an area where Constellation does business. Employee engagement is preferred but not required. Applicant organizations must have a board of directors and 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Applications should include a project budget that details how the grant award will be spent, with no more than 20 percent allocated to administrative and office expenses.

EPA’s Environmental Justice Small Grants Program



The Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Justice Small Grants Program supports and empowers communities working on solutions to local environmental and public health issues.

Last year, 16 projects were funded that focused on addressing climate equity, energy efficiency, renewable
energy, local green economy, and green jobs capacity. in 2010, the Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice received a grant for the “Hartford Recycles” project to educate 900 residents on how to recycle, to protect local air quality by reducing the amount of trash burned at the city’s incinerator.

The program assists recipients in building collaborative partnerships to help them understand and address environmental and public health issues in their communities. Successful collaborative partnerships involve not only well-designed strategic plans to build, maintain and sustain the partnerships, but also working towards addressing the local environmental and public health issues.
